About Us

Our Story.

Heyyy!!! đź‘‹

We are Derek & Lacey Green. We started Cross Country RV Solar to help us achieve our full-time travel dreams and to help others see the beautiful places this country has to offer.

Our home base is nestled in the heart of northern lower Michigan, where summers are sweet and the scenery is breathtaking. We’d love for you to join us there May-Oct for your installation. While we cherish our slice of paradise, we also love full-time travel, which also allows us to bring our expertise right to you as mobile RV solar installers – wherever you may be in the States.

Prior to working on RV solar panel systems, we owned and operated Green’s Custom Painting for 18 years where we honed our workmanship skills in construction and painting in high end homes throughout upper Michigan. Known for our meticulous attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness, we enjoyed and are grateful for the many years of happy customers we were able to serve. That experience paved the way to where we are today.

Our Story. (continued)

During this time, our passion for full-time travel and inspiring others on how to do the same grew. To begin turning our dreams into reality, Derek started attending the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas.

This is one of only a few respected schools in the USA that specializes in training and equiping aspiring students to become qualified RV Technicians and Inspectors. This immersive experience not only complemented our existing expertise, but also connected us with a supportive community of fellow professionals and other resources.

Let’s face it, we all run into a situation sometimes where we may not have the answer we need. Being part of the NRVTA network ensures that a solution is always within reach.

We launched Cross Country RV Solar in 2022, hit the road and haven’t looked back! Getting others “plugged into nature” and having the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful country that we live in is our passion.

We hope you have the honor to help you with your RV solar installation. Start your journey with us today by checking out our RV Solar Packages or taking the next step by filling out our online quote form. We’re looking forward to meeting you!

7 Steps

Our Process

There's Only 7 Easy Steps to Get #PluggedIntoNature

1. RV Solar Panel Kits

We get a lot of inquiries for RV solar installation, and although we are very competitively priced to other mobile RV solar installers, sometimes people just don’t realize how much RV solar will cost. This is why we recommend you check out our RV Solar Packages first so you know what to expect.

2. Online Quote For Initial Estimate

Fill out our quick online estimate form to give us details about your RV and energy needs. We'll use this information to create a personalized solar estimate and schedule a consultation to discuss it further at your convenience.

3. Finalize Your System

If you're happy with the initial estimate and want to proceed, we'll schedule a phone call to dive further into detail about the exact needs of your solar panel system so that we can provide you a finalized quote. Things such as roof space, rack design, custom accessories and electrical loads can all affect the initial estimate.

4. Schedule Install

When you're ready to move forward, we will schedule your install date - whether that is us going to you or you coming to us, then order and prepare the materials needed to be ready for installation day.

5. Installation Day!

Some installations can be completed in 1 full day, but more often than not, the install will take 3-5 days. We’ll let you know what to expect during scheduling (in the previous step) so that you can prepare accordingly. Once the equipment has been installed, connected and energized we will apply our unique firmware updates and programming which will allow your solar panel system to perform optimally and outperform others with the same equipment! We then thoroughly test everything to ensure correct operation.

6. Walkthrough & Training

It’s important to us that you know what everything is and how it operates. Your safety and satisfaction is our top priority! Plus, you will feel much more comfortable and confident knowing what everything is, how to check your battery levels, know how much solar your producing, and even how to quickly disconnect panels or other equipment should an emergency situation ever arise. We will also accept final payment for the remaining balance at this time.

7. Enjoy Being #PluggedIntoNature!

Frequently Asked Questions.

A complete solar system (Inverter, Batteries, and Panels) has many benefits. The system is wired into you current RV electrical system. As long as you have power (Ah) in your batteries your RV will function just the same as if its plugged into shore power. Every item in your RV can be run off your system including the microwave and air conditioning.

Besides the obvious freedom it provides to avoid campgrounds by boondocking without giving up amenities. This makes stopping at rest areas to eat, feed dogs, use the bathroom, etc. so much better when you can turn the air conditioning on for that hour. "Lot-docking" is so much better when you can still watch TV or make that much needed coffee in the morning to get going in your normal coffee maker. If the power goes out at your RV park or even your sticks & bricks home you would still have a fully functioning RV.

Every system has its limitations and everyone's needs are a little different. Some need reliable air conditioning to keep pets comfortable and safe. Some just want your 12v battery to stay charged . The great thing is we can build you a system to fit your budget now meeting as many needs as we can with the ability to easily grow the system over time.

An average RV solar panel system runs $12,000 with all parts and labor included. That said, what is “average”? That could be far off of what you want or need, less or more. Price changing factors include whether you plan to boondock full-time or only sometimes, if you want to be able to run your air conditioner (or multiple), and how long you want your battery storage to last in the event that it’s a cloudy week. Check out our popular pre-built RV Solar Panel Kits page to get an idea of what each average sized solar panel system can handle and what that would cost.

This all depends on your usage. Charging phones, running TV’s, the bug zapper, lighting and similar don’t use much electricity. However, running microwaves and air conditioners definitely do. The number and size of solar panels will be determined by what you want to run, your available roof space, and budget of course. To get an idea of what a few different sized solar panel systems can run, head over to our RV Solar Packages page!

This is the beauty of choosing Cross Country RV Solar, we are mobile RV solar installers! As full-time travelers ourselves, we can come to you anywhere in the USA. That said, most of our customers are happiest when we meet in a beautiful boondocking destination! Our rig is outfitted with a 30am power hookup and a water hookup that you can use during the installation. Start your boondocking adventure off on the right foot in a beautiful setting and get advice from experineced fulltimers so you can learn how rewarding and enjoyable being "Plugged Into Nature" really is!

All of my solar panel systems will run an A/C, but how often and how long you run the A/C will greatly affect the size of your solar array and batter bank. To give you an idea, running an A/C freely throughout the day takes the system from an average $12k system to $18k minimum or $25k+ if you want to run 2 air conditioners freely.

While our minimum solar panel systems are 300 amp hours, an average system ends up around 600 amp hours. 1,000 or more amp hours is considered a large system and more on the rare side for most people’s needs. It all comes down to how you plan to use your rv. Is this for occasional weekend trips? Will you be traveling for weeks at a time? Or will you be living fulltime in your rig and want the comfort and convenience of not having to worry about it as you go about living your life?

I love answering this question, because it’s one major thing that separates us from every other RV solar installer out there. YES you can! While others have you bring your rig to their shop and they disconnect electric from your rig during the install, our happiest customers meet with us in a beautiful boondocking location, perhaps in the woods, on the beach or cliffside with stunning views - all while being hooked up to a dedicated 30amp power hookup on our own rig! So yes, you can remain in your RV during the install, we can potluck together and share our best tips for boondocking and being “plugged into nature”!

Believe it or not, yes! That said, it depends on how much of the year you travel in your rig. Fulltime travel is obvious, but in some scenarios you can still qualify if you lived in it enough of the year. For more information and to see if you qualify, check out this page on Energy.gov.
